Way back at the dawn of the Warcraft 3 modding scene a new game mode arose. No not DOTA, I’m talking about the other one. In this mode you constructed various types of towers to defend against oncoming waves of increasingly difficult enemies. It was this mode, commonly referred to as Tower Defense, that would go on to spawn the MOBA genre. Tower Defense, however, remained an interesting genre in its own right, spawning hundreds of variations on those classic themes.
Dungeon Defenders is one of the more recent attempts at the genre. Eschewing the classic top down look of genre staples, Dungeon Defenders opted instead for a third person view popularised by games like Gears of War and Uncharted. The game mixed up the traditional method of relying solely on towers for protection by allowing each character to combat enemies as well, allowing for more diversity in engagements. The game has since spaened an equally popular sequel.
